ADK Laurentian Chapter Confers Outstanding Volunteer Awards
At its annual meeting, held in Potsdam on November 6 2005, the Laurentian Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club (ADK) conferred Outstanding Volunteer awards on Sandra Hildreth and Eileen Wheeler, in recognition of long term contributions to the Chapter and to the ADK as a whole.
Sandy Hildreth joined the Chapter in 1998. She has served as publicity coordinator, web site designer / maintainer, and newsletter editor. She was vice chair (education), running the Outdoors/Indoors series of presentations and recruiting teens to participate in the ADK High School Volunteer Trails program. She has served two terms as the Laurentian Chapter representative on the Board of Directors of the parent ADK organization, serving on the education, outings, and strategic planning committees, and is publicity coordinator for the ADK 2006 Fall Outing, which will bring members to St. Lawrence County from all over New York.
Sandy is a professional artist, specializing in Adirondack landscapes. She has contributed some of her work to ADK’s Harvest Moon Madness fund raising event. She has recently moved to Saranac Lake to pursue her artistic career, and will probably shift her organizational talents to that town’s North Woods Chapter (their gain, the Laurentian Chapter’s loss). However, we still expect to see Sandy often on outdoor trips and other events.
Eileen (Van Duyne) Wheeler has belonged to the Chapter since the early 1980s. She has served as vice chair for outings, coordinating the outdoor trip schedule, finding leaders, developing destinations, and organizing some memorable multi-day outings. She is presently completing a second term as vice chair for education, running the popular Outdoors/Indoors series and organizing high school participation on the High School Volunteer Trails program, as well as running technique clinics in various activities and Adirondack-themed craft workshops. She has recently assumed the role of co-chair of the ADK 2006 Fall Outing.
Eileen has been a frequent trip leader for almost the whole of her time in the Chapter, in the whole range of year-round activities the program offers (hiking, paddling, skiing, snowshoeing, etc). An accomplished outdoor person and Winter 46er, she has led trips on and off the beaten trails, and been a source of inspiration to new members.
The Laurentian Chapter is lucky to have benefited from Sandy’s and Eileen’s contribution, and salutes them.
