Laurentian Chapter to Sponsor Camper(s) at Camp Colby
The Laurentian Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club (ADK) would like to help youth who are 12 to 14 years old attend the Lake Colby Environmental Education Camp. This summer camp is located just outside the Village of Saranac Lake. The Chapter can help send children to the camp in two ways. One is to sponsor a child's application so that the child can submit his or her application two weeks earlier than children not sponsored by an organization. The other is for the Chapter to pay the cost of the camp for a needy child residing in our county (need will be based on the same criterion used for qualifying for reduced lunch prices at school).
Campers participate in lessons ranging from group dynamics to field, forest, and pond explorations, to a study of human impact. Group members learn science, solve challenges, play games, keep a journal, catch salamanders, net butterflies and discover the interconnectedness of life on earth. College-educated counselors guide all activities, encouraging participation and respect among group members while interpreting the natural world for campers. Additionally, campers choose from a variety of optional activities throughout the week that introduce them to outdoor pursuits and pastimes. Experiences include fishing, canoeing, archery, exploring a bog and overnight camping trips. There are several week-long options throughout the summer. Recent campers report having had a great time, learned a lot, and met new friends.
If you know of a child residing in our county who may enjoy this experience, please contact Rose Rivezzi, the Education Chair of the Laurentian Chapter, at firstname.lastname@example.org or at 265-8117. She will send him or her information about a short essay he or she will need to write. The deadline for the application and essay for the paid sponsorship is in mid-January; to allow time for the necessary essay writing, it would be best to contact Rose as soon as possible and not later than January 5.
