Spring Potluck Sunday, April 19
Cranberry Lake 50 Presentation
The Spring or Mud Season Potluck will be held Sunday, April 19, at the Potsdam Presbyterian Church Community Room. We will prepare for the upcoming hiking season with a presentation on the Cranberry Lake 50: the new 50-mile hiking trail around Cranberry Lake, through some of the most remote areas of the Adirondacks. Sherm Craig and Jamie Savage from Cranberry Lake will review the history of the trail, its construction, and offer a virtual guided tour of the trail. We’ll gather for the potluck at 5 p.m., and eat at 5:30. Sherm’s and Jamie’s talk will begin at 6:45.
The trail’s web site states, “The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s (DEC) Five Ponds Wilderness Unit Management Plan adopted in 1994 proposed improving the Cranberry area to provide a way to hike a 50-mile loop around the lake. This circumnavigation would give hikers an opportunity to experience lakeside views, deep forests, backcountry ponds and diverse wildlife, as well as peaceful campsites, nostalgic lean-tos, and the fading signs of the area's rich logging, milling and tourism history.”
