ADK Seeking Volunteer Hosts for Johns Brook Lodge
The ADK hopes to enlist volunteer hosts to greet and educate guests at Johns Brook Lodge (JBL), the Club-owned backcountry lodge about three miles by trail from Keene Valley.
Hosts are needed for weekends between June 24 and September 5. They are expected to arrive at JBL ideally in time for supper (6:30 PM) on a Friday evening and stay until at least midday Sunday (Monday in the case of long weekends). Hosts will greet arriving guests and the hiking public and provide objective information about trails, weather, and services. Meals will be eaten with guests, and volunteers will be housed in a platform tent on ADK property.
Applicants must be:
- Be ADK members, at least 21 years old, and experienced backcountry travellers
- Possess personal, reasonably current knowledge of JBL and its surroundings
- Have solid interpersonal skills
- Be able to attend a half-day training session on June 11 at Adirondak Loj (Friday night bunks will be provided, along with breakfast for those requesting; lunch is included with the session).
Volunteer hosts are expected to be excellent ambassadors for the ADK, and will have to walk a potential tightrope between the professional JBL hut crew, guests, hikers, and a variety of state employees.
