SUNY Potsdam Wilderness Education Mountain-A-Thon Training Exercise
Eleven students and faculty from SUNY Potsdam Wilderness Education participated in the Azure Mountain-A-Thon on Sunday, May 3rd. Each participant completed four laps carrying 50 lb of rocks for erosion control to the summit of Azure Mountain. Each lap completed was approximately a 1,000’ climb in 1 mile. The total for each participant was approximately 4,000’ of elevation gain with 200 lb of rocks; distance hiked was 8 miles. The group total for 11 participants was 44 laps up and down the mountain with 2,200 lb of rock. The event was a conditioning exercise for the upcoming 21 day Leadership II expedition to New Mexico’s Gila Wilderness, and was representative of the kind of exertion that that trip will require. Many of the students are or soon will be leaders in the Laurentian Chapter’s Educational Affiliate Program.
