Camp Colby Scholarships Available
The Laurentian Chapter will sponsor and pay for two children, who would not otherwise be able to afford a camp experience,
to attend the Lake Colby Environmental Education Camp. Our Chapter’s criterion for need will be the same as that which would qualify the child for reduced
lunches at school.
The summer camp is for youth who are 11 to 13 years old and is located just outside the Village of Saranac Lake. Campers participate in a discovery group while at camp, completing six lessons ranging from group dynamics to field, forest, and pond explorations, to a study of human impact. Group members learn science, solve challenges, play games, keep a journal, catch salamanders, net butterflies and discover the interconnectedness of life on earth. College-educated counselors guide all activities, encouraging participation and respect among group members while interpreting the natural world for campers. Additionally, campers choose from a variety of optional activities throughout the week that introduce them to outdoor pursuits and pastimes. Experiences include fishing, canoeing, archery and exploring a bog. There are several different week-long camp options throughout the summer.
Campers must be sincerely interested in an outdoor learning experience and be willing to participate in strenuous activities such as backpacking and canoeing.
To be considered for this opportunity, please write a one-page essay entitled “Why I’d Like to Attend Camp Colby.” Also include the name and phone number of a teacher or guidance counselor we can contact who would recommend you for this experience. Mail it to
8 Clarkson Ave, MS 5815
Potsdam, NY 13699
or email it to her at firstname.lastname@example.org.
We will let you (or your teacher) know if you have been selected. Make sure you include contact information including a phone number, and address and email address if you have one.
Registration will open for the DEC Camps on January 25 2017. In order to get the week you want, you will need to register on or close to that date. As a result, please send us your scholarship application before the school holidays start in December. We will review applications and notify accepted students in early January.
If you’d like more information about the camp and possible weeks you could sign up for, visit the DEC website at www.dec.ny.gov/education/1877.html. There is no need to fill out an application unless you are selected. I’m looking forward to hearing from you. We’re glad you’re interested in attending the Lake Colby Education Camp!
