Chair's Report

April, 2007

Chair: Tom Ortmeyer

As spring approaches, I hope that you’ve all been able to get out and enjoy the great winter weather we’ve been having these last few weeks. As one of the group said on the peak of Jenkins Mountain during the Dalys’ outing recently, “It feels like winter here.” I think that we all felt that was a very fitting tribute to both the day and the outing.

Membership continues to be a concern for both the club and the chapter. We hear from the club that word of mouth is one of our most effective recruitment tools—not the “hard sell,” but the more the casual statements such as, “I went on this great outing Saturday” or “we heard this really interesting talk last night” or “I’m going snowshoeing Saturday, would you like to come along?”

Massena Sportsman's Expo Our chapter recently decided to participate in the Massena Rod and Gun Club's Sportsman's Expo this year, which will be held April 14-15. This will give us a chance to meet and talk to people interested in the outdoors, and tell them about the club’s activities. We’ll have a display and at least one slide show, and perhaps some things to sell. If you might be interested in helping out with this for a while on either day, please contact me.

New DEC Commissioner Finally, I know there is interest among our members about the new administration in Albany. In the advance copy of Executive Director Neil Woodworth’s report for the upcoming Board Meeting, he states “ADK has…worked for many years with Governor Spitzer’s nominee for Commissioner of the Department of Environmental Conservation, Alexander “Pete” Grannis…. Pete has been a sponsor of legislation to strengthen the State Environmental Quality Review Act, to enlarge the public right to navigation for canoes and kayaks, and personal liability protection for landowners who permit trails like Long Path and the Finger Lakes Trails to cross their properties as well as for trail maintaining organizations like ADK.”

I look forward to seeing you all at an upcoming outing, Outdoors Indoors event, or the spring potluck.
