Sat, Jan 28: Grass River Snowshoe We’ll start where the South Branch of the Grass crosses Rt. 3 near Cranberry Lake. We’ll head downstream, following the abandoned Grass River RR right of way. We’ll plan to stop at the 3 paddling putins mentioned in Greg Smith’s recent article in Adirondac. About 5 miles total, with little elevation change. Sat, Feb 4: Azure Mountain The view from this mountain top is incredible and boasts a fire tower, too. The trail is short (1 mile each way) but steep (over 900 feet of elevation) making for a doable but exciting snowshoe trek for novices and more experienced people alike. Sat, Feb 11: Winter Forest Bathing Snowshoe to Lampson Falls Immerse your senses in the Winter Woods, connect deeply to nature, self and others through this guided walk with a series of invitations and small circle sharing. Level 1, little to no elevation gain, but a short downhill and incline to the rocks across from the Falls. Approximately 1 1/4 miles RT. Limited 6, Must RSVP and have your own snowshoes. Sat, Feb 11: Snowshoe Catamount Mountain (South Colton) This small mountain offers a nice overlook of the Carry Falls Reservoir. Depending on conditions, we can hike or snowshoe. The first mile is a gradual climb, and then gets pretty steep for the last ½ mile. Colton Winterfest will be in full swing, so we have the option to visit Catamount Lodge afterwards for refreshments and to see the quilt show. 3-4 miles RT, 330 ft elevation gain. Level 2, slow pace. Sat, Feb 18: Updated, new location Hiking in Thousand Islands National Park Recent weather and forecasts may lead to icy conditions in Murphy’s Point on Saturday, so the ski trip planned for this date is now changed to a hike in a new location. Destination is Jones Creek trail system in Thousand islands National Park, a short distance west of Brockville along the St. Lawrence. Bring both snowshoes and microspikes as we will need one and possibly both during the hike. No elevation changes and good trail, but ground condition may be snowy, icy, or both. 3-5 miles RT, Level 2. There should be good views of frozen wetlands. Sat, Feb 25: Stone Valley Photo Op We’ll explore 3 or more top photo sites along the upstream end of Stone Valley, with a plan to view and photograph the unique ice, water and snow views of winter. Follows a stretch of the Rideau Trail and a stretch of the Cataraqui rail trail. 7 miles RT, no change in elevation, easy to moderate, Level 2-3. Sat, Jun 24: Bear Mountain To help those working on the Loony Loop challenge, we’ll hike Bear Mountain for stupendous views of Cranberry Lake and the wilderness beyond. The trail is 3.8 miles long and steep in some places, with a total elevation gain of about 670ft. It is suitable for kids who are reasonably fit, so families are most welcome to join us. Beach: Come early and enjoy the beach. Lifeguards will be on duty. Kayaks and paddleboards will be available for free.
Raquette River Paddle (2:00 pm) Meet at Sandstoner Park. Bring a canoe or kayak, PFD, paddle, water bottle. The carry is 100 yards to a nice beach put in. Paddle 3+ miles of
flatwater. We will paddle upstream to the Potsdam falls/dam and then downstream, around the island and back to the beach. A limited number of kayaks will be available for

Bird watch (4:00 pm) All ages are invited to join us for a short walk looking for birds in the trees, river, and along the perimeter of the playing field and arena. We’ll

Sat, Aug 5: High Falls Loop via the Leary Trail. This is a classic Adirondack hike of 13.5 miles beginning in Wanakena. There are views of beaver flows, lovely woods and of course High Falls. It will be a full day of hiking over rolling terrain, but we will leave early so we can enjoy the hike without rushing. A hiking pole is recommended to make beaver dam crossings easier.
