Mon, Jan 1: Laurentian Chapter Annual New Year Outing at Higley Flow State Park 1:00-4:00 PM. Ski, snowshoe or hike (1:00-3:00pm) at the park to kick off the New Year in nature. At 3:00pm we’ll gather at the Lodge for a potluck finger-food social. Bring a snack to share. Weather permitting, we will have a bonfire and the Lodge will be open. Wed, Jan 3: Mount Arab Snowshoe Arab, from the French “érable,” meaning maple, is 2,525 feet high, but we’ll gain only 750 feet over the one mile we walk to climb it. There’s a fire tower at the summit for excellent “360” views. This is a joint outing with North Woods Chapter. Club members only. Moderate to somewhat challenging, depending on the footing. Sun, Jan 14: Ski to Clear Pond in the White Hill Wild Forest in Parishville It is 1.9 mi. from the paved road (where we park) to the pond, following a dirt road / snowmobile trail. The trail continues along the north side of the pond. Depending on how far we can go, the round-trip will be 4 to 5 miles. This is a moderately strenuous trip. We will hike if there is no snow. Sat, Jan 20: Lampson Falls This is a snowshoe hike for beginners along an old woods road to a tremendous 40-foot waterfall on the Grasse River. If you don’t have equipment, contact us and we should be able to help you. Level 1: One mile with option to extend to three miles. Sun, Jan 21: Outdoors Indoors – Trip Report from Newfoundland Thirteen chapter members spent a week last summer exploring the eastern side of the Great Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland. Jeff Miller will lead a visual tour of the outing with other trip members contributing stories about their adventures hiking, watching moose, and looking for icebergs (spoiler alert: they were everywhere!). Sat, Feb 3: Snowshoe (or Hike) Stone Valley Trail west side trails Join us as we explore the “quiet” side of Stone Valley. We will follow the trail along the river, possibly spot two cars to do an end-to-end hike. Some steep sections. Up to 4 miles, approx. 250-ft. elevation change. Level C+, fairly easy. Sat, Feb 10: Moved from Nicandri Center Hiking on the Rideau Trail Due to difficult snow conditions and weather considerations, the ski trip originally planned at Nicandri Nature Center is cancelled and replaced with a hike on the Long Bush section of the Rideau Trail. The start point is in Merrickville, Ontario, about 30 minutes from the Ogdensburg Bridge. About 4-5 miles on gravel roads and trail with little change in elevation. May be icy and/or crusty, so both traction devices and snowshoes will be needed. Overall difficulty moderate. Sat, Feb 24: Goodman Mountain Snowshoe (Revised from Moxham Mountain due to trail conditions) This little peak is south of Tupper Lake. There is a nice view from the top. We will snowshoe or hike at a casual pace. It is 1.6 mile to the top with an ascent of 581 ft. Bring snowshoes, spikes and a lunch or snack. Mon, Apr 22: Earth Day Hike, Hays Brook This trail, near Paul Smiths, is an old horse path and woods road leading to said brook, 2.7 miles in, where once there was a bridge. It passes through stands of red pine and scotch pine planted by the CCC in the 1930s. There are often signs of moose. We’ll pick up litter and do a little light trail clearing. Sat, Apr 27: Long Tom Mountain A hike up the highest peak fully in St. Lawrence County, this is a bushwhack off the Otterbrook trail northwest of Horseshoe Lake, headwaters of the Grasse River. We’ll stay on the Forest Preserve and have views east toward the High Peaks through the trees. Rated B+ (Moderately Strenuous). Tue, Apr 30: Trail Work on the Tooley Pond Road Trails We will perform side cutting, water bar clearing, and general inspection and maintenance on the five trails Laurentian Chapter has adopted along the Tooley Pond Road. Sat, May 11: Arkon Lake Loop, Frontenac Provincial Park Seven miles, not much net change of elevation but moderately rugged terrain. Rated C+ (Fairly Easy). Sun, May 12: Paddle West Branch St. Regis River from Saunders Falls This 5-mile flatwater paddle is rarely accessed, owing to a rough 1.5-mile carry. We will cut that down to a ½ mile carry because the trip leader is a member of the club that leases this land. Gain rare access to a wild boreal forest and grasslands, visit an Adirondack Great Lodge, takeout at a remote cabin. Expect to see deer and hawks, and hear the white-throated sparrow. Participants must wear a PFD and bring a lightweight canoe or kayak (under 35 pounds) or a cart for boats no heavier than 50 pounds. NO fishing gear is allowed. This trip is rated B (Short). Sat, May 25: Coney Mountain Join us for a Potsdam Pride event. This is a lovely mountain south of Tupper Lake with an open rocky summit and great views of the lake. There is a beautiful rock wall part way up the trail. Those who want a bit more walking can visit Lampson Falls with us before heading home. Both hikes are level C (easy). Sun, Aug 11: Red Tavern Road We will first visit the Everton Falls Preserve, a Nature Conservancy site along a branch of the St. Regis River. We’ll take the short hike through the forest across the road (level C). Afterwards we’ll take a look at the river access and do some clean-up. Finally, if energy persists (optional), we’ll explore a very new, little- traveled trail a few miles down the road which ascends a prominence (level C). Wed, Sep 25: Moxham Mt. This trail near North Creek has spectacular views from its bald summit ridge. It is a 4.6-mile round trip with 760 feet of ascent.
