Sat, Jan 1: Annual New Year Gathering and Potluck We will kick off the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of our Laurentian Chapter. 1:00-3:00 PM Come ski, snowshoe and tailgate at the park to kick off the New Year in nature. Bring a snack, weather permitting we will have a bonfire. The Lodge will be open with hot chocolate and celebratory cupcakes prepared by Big Spoon Kitchen. Sat, Jan 8: Ski to Clear Pond in White Hill Wild Forest, Parishville It is 1.9 mi. from the paved road (where we park) to the pond, following a snowmobile trail. The trail continues along the north side of the pond. Depending on how far we can go, the round-trip will be 4 to 5 miles. This is a moderately strenuous trip. Sun, Jan 9: Mt. Van Hoevenberg snowshoe We will determine starting time as trip gets closer. This is a 4.4 mile RT hike with elevation gain of 892 feet. We will be using the South Meadow approach. Sat, Jan 15: Mt. Arab climb We’ll use spikes or snowshoes on this 2.2 miles RT for an elevation gain of 764 feet. The view from the fire tower can be awesome. Sat, Feb 5: Beginner snowshoeing at the Nicandri Center We will snowshoe in the afternoon on the trails from the Nicandri Center at Robert Moses Park near Massena.  The center has snowshoes available, and no previous snowshoeing experience is needed. Sat, Feb 12: Hike or Snowshoe Catamount Mountain (South Colton) This small mountain offers a nice overlook of the Carry Falls Reservoir. Depending on conditions, we can hike or snowshoe. The first mile is a gradual climb, and then gets pretty steep for the last ½ mile.  3-4 miles RT, 330 ft elevation gain. Level 2, slow pace. Sat, Apr 30: Outing Leadership Clinic Learn our basic procedures and relive some of our experiences in this introduction to being an ADK Laurentian outing leader. The morning presentation will cover planning outings, writing descriptions, vetting participants, and risk management, followed by a half-day simulated outing at Higley Flow State Park. Sat, May 7: Bear Mt We will begin at the Gilbert tract parking area on Route 3 and hike out and back to the mountain. There is a lovely view of Cranberry Lake a short way past the top of the mountain. We hope to find wildflowers and to beat the beginning of bug season. Sun, Jun 12: Clean up The Saranac River Grab your grungiest clothes, your closed toe/lace up sneakers, and an old pair of garden gloves, and join us as we clean up the Saranac River downriver from downtown for a mile or two. The canoes and all the equipment you need is provided by St. Regis Canoe Outfitters, so bring yourself and a sense of adventure. You never know what you might find at the bottom of the river. In years past we have uncovered bed springs, shopping carts, a guitar, more cans of beer, plastic bags, and more tires than you can imagine. Come join us and help fill a boat. Mon, Jun 13: ADK Cycle Outing ADK’s annual cycle outing, June 13 - 18, based in Potsdam. Multiple ride options daily in the Saint Lawrence River Valley and along the rivers that flow north from the Adirondacks. Sat, Jun 25: Tooley Pond Road “Clarksboro Trail” We will explore the new trail to an outlook which has a lovely view of Twin Falls. 2.2 miles RT, 250 ft elevation gain. After lunch, we will have time to explore some of the waterfalls along Tooley Pond road, most likely Sinclair and Basford falls for an additional mile of hiking. Sat, Jul 16: Anniversary Celebration at Murphy's Point Provincial Park As US/Canada border considerations still pose problems for some, we’re holding a local celebration north of the St. Lawrence. The organized event will be a social gathering and picnic to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Adirondack Mountain Club and the 50th anniversary of the Laurentian Chapter. There are excellent possibilities of self-organized hiking, paddling, and cycling trips as well as swimming available. All from both sides of the border are welcome. Nature & History Hike on the Raquette The hike will mix nature observation with some history of the Raquette River. We’ll start walking at 2:00, from the Mill St trailhead (across from the Hannawa Fire Department), We’ll amble north along the river shore for an hour or so, then retrace our steps. Upper & Lower Lakes Bike Tour. We’ll start at 1pm from the Grass River Boat Launch on Rte. 68, and bike around the perimeter of the Upper and Lower Lakes Wildlife Management Area. Mon, Jul 25: Huckleberry Lake Hike 4.4 mile round-trip hike to Huckleberry Lake in Wolf Lake State Forest from the west parking area on Ames Road in Talcville. This will be a leisurely out and back hike with a lengthy lunch at the lean-to, so you might bring something special to share. Trails in Wolf Lake State Forest have little elevation gain but sometimes rough or wet footing, suggesting hiking boots and poles. The forest is geologically part of the Laurentian Shield of Canada, so the terrain and plant life are as seen in the paintings of Tom Thompson and the Group of Seven at the National Gallery in Ottawa. Sun, Jul 31: Bicycle to Kring Point State Park Joint outing with Black River Chapter. We will start near Oak Point on the St. Lawrence, and take an inland route upstream to Kring Point State Park, where we’ll have a leisurely lunch break with perhaps a stop for ice cream when leaving the park. We’ll ride at a relaxed pace and enjoy the views. Our return will be along the river, and we expect to have a nice tailwind. Total distance: 31 miles. Level 3-4 depending on conditions. The trail passes through a variety of habitats and offers spectacular views of “The Narrows” and Eel Bay along the St. Lawrence River. The climb to the overlook is fairly steep and rocky. Sat, Aug 20: Hike to West Branch St. Regis River and Moose’s Pond We will hike a 4-mile loop trail with stops at the West Branch of the St. Regis River and Moose’s Pond in the D.E.C. 5-mile conservation easement. Learn where to hike, paddling opportunities, and how a D.E.C. conservation easement works. We will also see the entrance to the proposed D.E.C. Kildare conservation easement. Just on the dirt road drive in, I have seen deer, ruffed grouse, spruce grouse and wild turkey. On the hike, we may see a Barred Owl, beaver or Red-shouldered hawk. Sat, Oct 22: Low's Ridge Upper Dam Trail The trail begins near Horseshoe Lake, south of Tupper Lake. It is mostly flat and follows an old road past a vast peatland to Hitchins Pond. There is a 0.2-mile scramble to the top of a rocky ridge overlooking the pond and surrounding area. The scramble is optional, you could choose to just relax and enjoy the view of the pond. Sat, Dec 17: Whiteface Veterans Memorial Highway Annual Ski Trip We will ski up and down the Whiteface Veterans Memorial Highway, AKA the Whiteface Toll Road,the highest road in New York State. This is a traditional early season ski trip, although we are scheduling it a little later than in the past because of climate change. It is a 10-mile roundtrip, moderately strenuous (level 4) cross-country skiing, depending on conditions, which can include bare spots and windblown areas with icy terrain.
